Guided hikes on Table Mountain and Lion's Head

Qualified adventure guide

The right route for you

Table Mountain has dozens of ways up, and they're not all the same. Tell me how fit you are and how you feel about heights, and I'll match you to a route you'll enjoy.

Why hike with a guide?

Safety handled

I carry a first aid kit, watch the weather, set the pace and make the call if conditions change. You get to enjoy the view.

More than a walk

You'll know what you're looking at: the peaks, the fynbos, the bays and the stories behind them. I'll take the photos too.

Lion's Head rising above a sea of cloud on a clear morning, with the Atlantic beyond

Lion's Head

  • Moderate
  • 2 to 2.5 hours
  • R1 100 per person

Cape Town's classic short summit. A spiral path winds round the peak to 669 metres, with views all the way round: Table Mountain, the Atlantic seaboard, the City Bowl and Robben Island. Near the top there's a short scramble up chains and ladders, and an easier path around it if you'd rather skip it.

Good for: First-time visitors, sunrise chasers and anyone with moderate fitness.

Morning sun breaking through cloud over a rocky mountain path

Platteklip Gorge

  • Moderate to strenuous
  • 3 to 4 hours
  • R1 500 per person

The most direct way up the front of Table Mountain. It's a steep stone staircase through a deep gorge, with no scrambling and no exposure, so it tests your fitness, not your nerve. You come out on the top, a short walk from the upper cable station.

Good for: Fit walkers who want to say they climbed Table Mountain on foot.

Kasteelspoort via Diving Board

  • Moderate
  • 4 to 5 hours
  • R1 500 per person

A quieter route up the Twelve Apostles side, above Camps Bay. It's a steady climb with ocean views the whole way. The highlight is the Diving Board, a rock ledge that makes one of the best photos on the mountain.

Good for: Hikers who want big views and fewer people, without serious scrambling.

India Venster

  • Challenging with scrambling
  • 3 to 4 hours
  • R1 500 per person

The adventurous line up Table Mountain's front face, right beneath the cable cars. You'll scramble with your hands, using staples and chains on the steepest parts, and there's some exposure. It's the route for people who want to feel they've really climbed something.

Good for: Fit, confident hikers with a head for heights.

The sun rising behind a rocky summit, with flat land and the sea far below

Devil's Peak

  • Strenuous
  • 4 to 5 hours
  • R1 500 per person

The peak to the left of Table Mountain, and the best seat in the house. From the 1000 m summit you see Table Mountain side-on, with the city, Table Bay and False Bay all in view. It's a long, steep climb, and far quieter than its famous neighbour.

Good for: Strong hikers who've done the classics and want something different.

Wooden ladders climbing through green forest beside mossy rock

Skeleton Gorge

  • Moderate to strenuous
  • 4 to 5 hours
  • R1 500 per person

The green side of Table Mountain. We start in Kirstenbosch Garden and climb Smuts Track through shady indigenous forest, up wooden ladders beside a mountain stream, to the dams on the Back Table. We come down the steps of Nursery Ravine, back into the garden.

Good for: Fit walkers who want forest, shade and a quieter side of the mountain. A great choice on hot or windy days.

Your guide

Hi, I'm Dan

I'm a Cape Town local and a qualified adventure guide. For the past ten years I've trained people for careers at sea, and spent my time off on the mountain above the city. In 2021 I decided to make guiding my work, and I've been building towards it ever since.

I keep groups small so the day runs at your pace. Whether it's your first hike or your hundredth, my job is to get you up and down safely, and to make sure you enjoy every step.

What hikers say

★★★★★ 5.0 from 2 Google reviews

  • A lovely morning out on the Sandy Bay shipwreck hike. The route is beautiful, with sweeping views along the coastline and the wreck itself is well worth the walk. Daniel knew the trail well, kept a comfortable pace and made the whole outing feel easy and relaxed. It’s dog friendly too, which made it even better for me. Highly recommend for anyone wanting a scenic coastal hike around Cape Town.

Questions

Good to know

What should I bring?

Closed shoes with good grip, at least 1.5 litres of water (please don't skip this), a snack, a warm windproof layer, a hat and sunscreen. Bring a headtorch for sunrise or sunset hikes. A small backpack keeps your hands free.

How fit do I need to be?

It depends on the route. Lion's Head suits most people with moderate fitness. India Venster and Kloof Corner Ridge need good fitness and a head for heights. Tell me about your experience when you book, and I'll make sure the route fits.

What happens in bad weather?

The mountain is exposed, and wind, rain and cloud can make routes unsafe. I make the call, usually the day before. If I cancel because of the weather, you can reschedule for free or get a full refund.

What if I need to cancel?

You get a full refund if you cancel up to 24 hours before the hike. Inside 24 hours, you can reschedule, but there's no refund.

How big are the groups?

A maximum of 8 guests per hike, and fewer on the scrambling routes. Private hikes are available on request.

Is there an age limit?

Children aged 12 and up are welcome with an adult. The scrambling routes are for ages 16 and up.

What's included?

Your guide, a safety briefing, a first aid kit on the trail and photos of your hike, plus tea or coffee on sunrise hikes. I can arrange transport from the CBD or Sea Point for up to 3 people, at an extra fee, ask Dan. Larger groups need to arrange their own transport.

What's excluded?

Food, drinks and any cableway ticket aren't included.
